Queensland Public Curator Insanity Files
Surnames beginning with I - J

Does your family history have someone who 'vanished'? If you cannot find a death certificate or if children were raised by someone other than a parent, check mental asylum records. Reasons for admission included epilepsy, head injury, alcoholism, birth defects and depression (especially post-natal depression). Many patients (adults and children) spent only days or weeks in an asylum, and descendants would be unaware of that.

Insanity files (which are only closed for 75 years from the date of the last document in the file) are different from case books. Public Curator insanity files are mainly about getting someone to pay for the patient's maintenance, so they often have superb information about the patient's relatives.

There are files for people admitted to mental asylums at Goodna (Woogaroo / Wolston Park), Toowoomba (Willowburn) and Ipswich (Sandy Gallop). File contents vary, but they usually give dates of admission and discharge or death, and many have letters from the patient or his/her relatives, police reports, certificates, wills, divorce details, lists of property, etc. Information about relatives may include addresses, biographical data, children, employment history, property, financial and social circumstances, etc.

Names below are from my index to a register of insanity files. In cases where the file is missing, you will get brief details in the register.

Other sources

To research mental asylum patients, use all available sources, including:

For more information about those sources, and many others, see my mini-guide 'Researching Queensland Mental Asylum Patients'.

Explanation of names below:

  • Source: Register of insanity files c.1865-1918. Some names are missing from the register, but other records have details of those patients.
  • Scroll through the list to find spelling variants. Some names are spelled incorrectly in the records.
  • UPPERCASE for SURNAMES;  Mixed Case if there is no distinct surname.
  • Names without a surname, eg Ada (Aboriginal), are listed under the first letter of the name.
  • '..' means that I could not decipher some letters.
  • A question mark means handwriting was very difficult to read and the spelling is in doubt.
  • Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
  • Apostrophes have been removed from names (eg, O'HANLAN is listed as OHANLAN).
  • Some diacritical marks such as umlauts were removed by the indexing software.
  • If there are two entries for a name, there may be two files for the same person, or two people with the same name. To find out, inspect the files.
  • For names listed below, I offer a research and copying service (that link leads to instructions).
  • I also offer a research service for patients with surnames S to Z admitted up to 1918 and all patients admitted 1919-1945. Use this request form (opens in a new window).

 Names beginning with: A B   C D   E F   G H   I J   K L   M   N O   P Q   R
'S' to 'Z' surnames will be added later (watch for announcements on What's New).

How to order a copy of a file

Names beginning with other letters

Copying service. Allow several weeks for a reply (I am often away for family reasons).

As a professional genealogist, I've spent thousands of hours indexing original records, and it also takes time to travel to a record office, order a bundle/volume, find the relevant file/page, order photocopies or take digital photos, and send them to you; so I charge fees for these services:

Option 1:  If you want me to locate and copy original documents, the total cost will depend on what records are available for a particular patient. You pay for the time it takes me to search multiple record series, get copies and write a detailed report. Send a deposit of $65 per patient (any surplus is refundable). Print the request form (it opens in a new window) and send it by post (not email). See the list of payment methods available.

Option 2:  I will (for a fee of $2 per entry) provide source references (the record office, its location number for the source, and approximate year) so you can do the work yourself. If the same name is listed (above) twice, that is two entries. See how to send requests and payment (my email address is on that page).
