  • [S4] British Library. Digital images of newspapers are on the British Newspaper Archive website (https://tidd.ly/3fOx6QI). They are also available with some Findmypast subscriptions (https://tidd.ly/3KIWGEW).
  • [S5] Ryerson Index (https://ryersonindex.org/). Details shown are sometimes wrong, but this is a useful ongoing index to death/funeral notices and obituaries in Australian newspapers, and on some funeral directors' websites. Newspapers that have been indexed are usually in State Libraries in Australia and/or on the Trove website (https://trove.nla.gov.au/).

  • [S23] General Register Office, England and Wales. Civil registration index, England and Wales, July 1837 to date (https://www.gro.gov.uk). This index is based on copies sent in by the incumbent or parish clerk, so there are mistakes. Parish registers of marriage are therefore more reliable than certificates issued by the GRO. In Feb 2022 the online indexes covered births 1837-1934 plus 1984-2020; and deaths 1837-1957 plus 1984-2020. Check their website to see whether that has been expanded. Unlike the old indexes, these show many middle names, and mother's maiden name for births even *before* 1911, and age for deaths even *before* 1865.
  • [S25] FreeBMD Index (https://freebmd.org.uk/), derived from the General Register Office (England and Wales) civil registration indexes. Extra information (middle names, mother's maiden name, age at death, etc), and entries for more recent years, may be in the new online indexes on the General Register Office (England and Wales) website. Occasionally, though, FreeBMD has details that are not in the GRO index.
  • [S26] New South Wales will books. State Archives and Records Authority of New South Wales, Australia, ref. NRS 13661. Between 1800 and 1924, copies of the wills were handwritten; between 1924 and 1952 they were typed; and later records are photocopies. Images are online via https://tidd.ly/3KIWGEW

  • [S29] Calendar of the Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration made in the Probate Registries of the High Court of Justice in England; commonly known as 'National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations, England and Wales)'. Principal Probate Registry, England and Wales. Searches are easiest on Findmypast (https://tidd.ly/3KIWGEW). The last time I checked, Findmypast's index included 1858-2019 but Ancestry's only covered 1858-1995. The entire index (1858 until now) is on the Government website (https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate). Images there and on Findmypast include some handwritten annotations that are not shown in the version on Ancestry (https://bit.ly/AncSS).
  • [S30] Wills, probate and administration records (details cited where applicable or available on request). Copies purchased by Judy WEBSTER unless otherwise specified.
  • [S32] Prerogative and Exchequer Courts of York probate records. 'Registered probate' means a copy of the full text of the document as transcribed by a court clerk at the time of proving. 'Probate Act Book' means a summary of the grant of administration. Those images, from microfilm, were supplied when original wills and probate files were not available during the pandemic. If I previously obtained a copy of the original will, my citation will say that. To see what is available now, use the Prerogative and Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index 1688-1858 on Findmypast (https://tidd.ly/3KIWGEW). It has images of the index, and links for ordering document copies from the Borthwick Institute for Archives. Although most of the records in this collection relate to Yorkshire, there are also entries for people from elsewhere who had their wills proved in the Prerogative or Exchequer Court of York.
