Maintenance Payments to Deserted Wives / Children

Records of maintenance payments to deserted wives, deserted children and illegitimate children, often created by a local Court of Petty Sessions, are useful for genealogy. Records currently accessible at Queensland State Archives include some for Boonah, Brisbane, Charters Towers, Croydon, Ingham, Maryborough, Mount Morgan, Roma, Thursday Island, Toowoomba, Townsville and Warwick.

Brisbane CPS registers of maintenance payments c.1899-1925 usually show the complainant's name (and occasionally an address), defendant's name (and often one or more addresses for him), date of the maintenance order, dates and amount of payments, and whether the order was for a deserted wife, child or illegitimate child. Remarks may include a death date, or the date when a couple resumed living together, or prison sentences for non-payment (in which case you should also use Police Gazettes and prison records).

I am indexing the Brisbane registers, and names from one volume will be added to this page soon. To be notified when that happens, use the 'ChangeDetection' button above. In the meantime, several hundred names from one register of maintenance payments are in my Interim Index (see 'Other Suggestions' below).
