Queensland Police Gazettes: selected names

While using Queensland Police Gazettes (an excellent source for genealogy and family history) I indexed a few selected names. The list below includes missing persons, friends and relatives sought, fathers of illegitimate children, victims of crime, neglected children, complainants, alleged offenders, prisoners, wife/child deserters, deserters from ships/army, escaped lunatics, etc. The notices vary in content, but many give a detailed physical description, age, place of origin, occupation, ship of arrival, and (if applicable) place of arrest, offence, trial details, prison, sentence, and sometimes other details or a photograph.

NEW!  An index to every name mentioned in Qld Police Gazettes 1864-1874 is on FindMyPast. That site also has Gazettes up to 1900, derived from the searchable PDF versions of Qld Police Gazettes 1864-1945 published by Archive Digital Books Australasia.

Qld State Archives hold Qld Police Gazettes from 1864, and bound indexes to the Gazettes for 1897-1960 and Wanted Lists 1960-Mar 1971, but be alert when using the indexes as some pages are missing or bound in the wrong order. From 1897 onwards, two 6-monthly indexes are usually bound with each Gazette.

Explanation of names below:

  • The selected entries below are from various dates between 1875 and 1935.
  • Included are missing persons, friends and relatives sought, fathers of illegitimate children, victims of crime, neglected children, complainants, alleged offenders, prisoners, wife/child deserters, deserters from ships/army, escaped lunatics, etc.
  • Scroll through the list. Names may have been spelled incorrectly in the records.
  • Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
  • Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'BYRNE.
  • Abbreviations:  b.=born, ENG=England, IRL=Ireland, SA=South Australia, VIC=Victoria, etc.
  • Even if a name is listed here only once, there may be multiple Gazette notices about that person.
  • For names below, I can order copies of original records at Qld State Archives (this link leads to instructions).

Copying service. Allow up to 8 weeks for a reply; I am often away for family reasons.

As a professional genealogist, I offer these services:

  1. For names listed above, I can obtain a copy of the Police Gazette notice. The fee is 'per entry', not 'per name', so if the same name is listed twice, that is two entries.

    * If you live in Australia: one entry $20, extra entries for the same name $8 each (including postage).

    * If you live overseas: one entry AUD$23, extra entries for the same name AUD$8 each (including postage).

    * If you just want the source reference (year+page) so that you can do the work yourself: $5 for one specific entry ('Surname + GivenName'), or if there are multiple entries, $10 per surname.

  2. Even if a name is listed (above) only once, there may be multiple notices about that person (eg, missing friend sought + located; offender sought + arrested + discharged from prison; offender imprisoned many times; etc). I can search for additional Police Gazette references to the same person, and get copies. If applicable I can also search prison records and other sources. The cost will depend on the research time and number of pages to be copied, which I cannot predict in advance. Use my standard request form.

$See the list of payment methods available (my address is on that page).
