Undertakings re Fares, 1929-1955

I have started indexing 'undertaking files' 1929-1955. These records are useful for family history, especially if you are researching someone who 'disappeared'. The files are for people who signed an undertaking to repay the cost of fares for travel by rail or ship. Many applicants (especially during the Great Depression) were travelling in search of work. Most journeys were from one Australian State to another, but some undertakings were for fares to or from another country.

Examples:

  • A man wanted to bring his runaway daughter home from interstate.
  • A woman applied to take her three grandchildren to Western Australia.
  • A mother and daughter had come to Queensland to give evidence at an inquest and could not afford the return fare.
  • A woman and her granddaughter came from Canada to join relatives in Australia.
  • A woman who had been abandoned by her husband wanted to move interstate.
  • A man wanted his wife to join him in India (the file shows that he later went to Canada and died there).

File contents vary, but many include letters and a signed undertaking. Some refer to aliases, criminal trials, deaths, mental asylum admissions, illegitimate children, immigration or emigration, etc.

Explanation of names below:

  • Indexing is still in progress. Click the 'receive email' bar (above) to be notified when more names are added.
  • Date range: 1929 - 1955.
  • Includes those who signed undertakings and some other people mentioned.

  • Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
  • Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'LEARY.

Copying service. Allow several weeks for a reply (I am often away for family reasons).

As a professional genealogist, I've spent thousands of hours indexing original records, and it also takes time to travel to a record office, order a volume/bundle, find the relevant file/page, order photocopies or get digital images, and send them to you; so I charge fees for these services:

Option 1:  If you want me to copy the original document, send a deposit of $40 per surname. I do not know the file size until I get to the record office, but $40 is usually sufficient (and if it costs less, the surplus is refunded). I will not exceed your deposit without your permission. See how to send requests and payment (my email address is on that page).

Option 2:  I will (for a fee of $5 for one SURNAME plus $1 per additional SURNAME) provide source references (the record office, its location number for the source, a file number and approximate date range) so you can do the work yourself. See how to send requests and payment (my email address is on that page).
