Historical Photos & Sketches of People
Surnames L-Z
sketch example

Various series of records in State Archives contain photographs or sketches of people. Each photo is accompanied by biographical or background details that are superb for family history. My index includes photos/sketches of:

  • people sought by anxious relatives/friends
  • people believed drowned or murdered
  • other missing persons (some were children)
  • wife / child deserters
  • deserters from ships or military service
  • fathers of illegitimate children
  • prison escapees
  • criminals and suspects.

Explanation of names below:

  • Most were born in the United Kingdom, Ireland, western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada. A few were from other countries.
  • Date range: With one exception (George Wheeler PRATT), photos currently listed here were taken before 1925, but photos yet to be added include some that are more recent.
  • This is an ongoing indexing project, with more than 1,700 names listed now and about 1,000 names yet to be added (click this button to be notified):

  • I am indexing photos in several record series at Qld State Archives, but this list does NOT include photos in migrant dossiers.
  • Abbreviations:  b. = born;  'c' before a date = circa/about.
  • Scroll through the list. Some names were spelled incorrectly in the records.
  • Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
  • Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'LOUGHLIN.
  • If there are multiple entries for a name, investigate them all. There may be several different photos of one person.
  • See also 'Other suggestions' (below 'Copying Service').
  • For names below, you can obtain copies of the original records (this link leads to instructions).

Copying service. Allow several weeks for a reply (I am often away for family reasons).

As a professional genealogist, Archives research is how I earn a living, so...

Option 1:  I will (for a fee of $10 per surname) tell you the Qld State Archives source location number(s) and how to find out approximate dates. I charge a fee because I've spent thousands of hours indexing original records. See how to send requests and payment.

Option 2:  If you want me to go to the Archives and copy the original record, my fee is $15 per entry. If the same name is listed twice, that is two entries (but don't count 'see' cross-references). The fee covers out-of-pocket expenses plus my time (eg, travel time; ordering a bundle/volume; finding the relevant file/page; ordering photocopies or taking digital photos; packaging/sending copies; etc). See how to send requests and payment.
