This page lists names of offenders in Cloncurry watchhouse, and victims of crime mentioned in watchhouse records, for part of 1874-1876 and 1887-1891. The records are useful for genealogy and local history.

The names include people charged at Cloncurry, prisoners in the watchhouse overnight en route from other places (including Boulia and Croydon), victims of crime, and neglected children taken into custody.

Details shown in the records usually include date and hour of apprehension;  prisoner's name, age, occupation, country or State of origin, religion and level of education;  offence;  previous convictions if known;  property found on prisoner;  signature of person receiving the property (often the prisoner);  how the case was disposed of (fine, imprisonment, discharged, remanded, sent to asylum / hospital, committed for sentence at which court and when);  and sometimes bail details.

Explanation of names below:

• Date range: 18 Feb 1887 to 31 Dec 1891, plus a loose page at the front for 20 Mar 1874 to (allegedly) 14 Apr 1875, but closer inspection suggests that it is probably 1876, not 1875.
• Includes offenders, victims, and persons into whose care neglected children were placed. Police officers are indexed only if they were victims of assault etc.
• If a prisoner's signature has a different spelling from the one officially recorded, a cross-reference has sometimes (but not always) been made.
• 'see' / 'or' usually indicate either an alias or an alternative interpretation of the handwriting;  'from' usually indicates the place from which a prisoner was being transferred;  'other' means someone other than a prisoner or victim.
• '..' means that no surname was stated, or I could not decipher some letters.
• A question mark means handwriting was very difficult to read so the spelling is in doubt.
• Some abbreviated names ('Jas' for James, 'Jno' for John etc.) are indexed as they appear in the records, and some have been expanded.
• Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
• Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'KEEFFE.
• Scroll through the list. Names may have been spelled incorrectly in the records.
• If there is more than one entry for a name, the same person may be mentioned more than once, or there may be several people with the same name. The only way to find out is to consult the original source.
